Conveniently located near Fukuyama Castle Park, the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of History is an easy stop while exploring central Fukuyama.
It is about a 5-minute walk west of JR Fukuyama Station (North Exit / "Fukuyama Castle Exit"), making it convenient to visit between major sightseeing spots.
The museum’s major highlight is a full-scale reconstruction of Kusado Sengen, a nationally renowned medieval port town that flourished from the Kamakura to Muromachi periods. Here, you can experience history not only by reading about it, but also by walking through it.
In one visit, you can connect the history of the Fukuyama Castle area and the Seto Inland Sea (Setouchi) region—ideal for those seeking something beyond the standard sightseeing route.

From prehistoric times to the modern era, this exhibition introduces the history of the Seto Inland Sea (Setouchi) region through themes such as daily life, transportation, and trade, using artifacts, reconstructions, and models.

A section of Kusado Sengen has been reconstructed to its original size, with excavated artifacts displayed around it by function.
Visitors can gain a more concrete sense of medieval life and culture in the Seto Inland Sea region.
“The World of KAN Chazan”

KAN Chazan (born in present-day Fukuyama City) was an eminent poet who composed Chinese poems, as well as a Confucian scholar and educator active in the late Edo period.
The museum houses materials related to KAN Chazan, including 6,255 items designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
“MORIYA Hisashi Collection”

This is one of Japan’s premier collections of historical maps, assembled over approximately 40 years by MORIYA Hisashi, also born in Fukuyama City.
It features Japanese and Western maps primarily from the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as historical materials illustrating cultural exchange between Japan and other nations.
The collection totals 1,739 items and is presented alongside “The World of KAN Chazan.”
Because the museum is within easy walking distance of both JR Fukuyama Station and Fukuyama Castle Park, it fits neatly into a short city walk or as a stop before catching a train. If time allows, linger in the full-scale town reconstruction to discover small details of medieval life.
