About Pugwash

An organization of the world's scientists since 1957 have worked on various scientific and social issues, including the abolition of nuclear weapons; awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995. The World Conference brings together opinion leaders and researchers from around the world to seriously discuss and communicate the abolition of nuclear weapons and war, based on the principles of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto of 1955. Three World Conference have been held in Japan.

What is the Pugwash Conference on Science & World Affairs?

The Pugwash Conference aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, to identify concrete paths and goals for the early realisation of nuclear weapons abolition, to adhere to the UN Charter, which states that ‘International disputes shall be settled by peaceful means’ and ‘In international relations the threat or use of force shall in no circumstances be resorted to’. In compliance with the Charter of the United Nations, which states that ‘international disputes shall be settled by peaceful means’ and ‘in international relations the threat or use of force shall be refrained from in all circumstances’, the UNFPA aims to exchange frank opinions and make concrete recommendations for the abolition of war and the realisation of human security.

Public Symposium "Beyond Nuclear Deterrence" as a Post-Event at the 63th Pugwash Conference on Science & World Affairs

On the closing day of the Pugwash Conference (Wednesday, November 5), a public symposium hosted by Hiroshima Prefecture and HOPe will be held at the International Conference Center Hiroshima, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

At this event, we will examine the inherent challenges of nuclear deterrence—the foundation of security relied upon by nuclear-armed states and their allies—including what might happen if nuclear deterrence fails. We will then explore, as concretely as possible, how a security system not relying on nuclear deterrence might be constructed. We are honored to welcome two distinguished scientists who have long been active globally in the field of nuclear disarmament, including through the Pugwash Conferences. Together with all of you, we wish to explore these issues.
