Utilizing the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and meetings related to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), we communicate our commitment to peace directly to UN ambassadors and representatives of various governments. 
In addition, we hold the side events in those meetings to emphasize the importance of nuclear weapons abolition using three approaches.

NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) Review Conference

Since the NPT came into force, the NPT Review Conference has been held every five years to review efforts made by the States Parties regarding nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and to discuss measures that should be taken in the future. Three Preparatory Committee sessions will be held in preparation for this conference.
*Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT): A treaty that plays a central role in the nuclear non-proliferation regime, with three pillars of nonproliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Opened for signature in 1968, and entered into force in 1970​

【2025】

The Governor participated in the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from April 24 to May 2. Through side events and meetings, he promoted the efforts of the prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) to government officials from various countries, and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

The Governor participated in the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), held at the United Nations Office in Geneva from July 21st to 27th, where he promoted the efforts of the prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)

This meeting discusses the implementation and conclusion status of the treaty and measures for the verification and irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons programs.

*Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW): A treaty aimed at establishing legal norms for the prohibition of nuclear weapons, legally prohibiting states parties from developing, testing, producing, acquiring, possessing, stockpiling, using, or threatening to use nuclear weapons Opened for signature in 2017 Entered into force in 2021

【2025】

Kunihiko Shimada, Principal Director of the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe), participated in the third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, U.S. He promoted the efforts of the prefecture and HOPe, and called on other nations to strengthen their efforts towards the abolition of nuclear weapons.

From June 16th to 24th, we called for the abolition of nuclear weapons through various means including dialogue events at the Civil Society Forum held prior to the first Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons held in Vienna, Austria.

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

This is a forum to follow up on and review the United Nations' “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

*Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 17 goals and 169 targets listed in “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the agenda adopted at the Sustainable Development Summit held in 2015.

Taking advantage of the opportunity of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Governor spoke to conference participants, UN officials, and government officials from various nations regarding the efforts of the prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe), and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

HLPF2024

【2022】

From July 4th to 10th, we hosted a session at the special event of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and through the session as well as individual exchanges of views with UN officials, we promoted the peace efforts of our prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) and called for the advancement of nuclear disarmament.

UN Summit of the Future

This summit deliberates on how the international community should cooperate to achieve goals such as the SDGs while also addressing new threats and opportunities.

【2024】

Principal Director Shimada of the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) visited the United States from September 18th to 23rd, on the occasion of the Summit of the Future (SOTF) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and promoted the efforts of the prefecture and the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Contribution to the United Nations Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War

  • Under the resolution adopted on December 24, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly decided to establish a “Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War” to investigate  “the physical effects and societal consequences of a nuclear war on a local, regional and planetary scale, inter alia, the climatic, environmental and radiological effects, and their impacts on public health, global socioeconomic systems, agriculture and ecosystems, in the days, weeks and decades following a nuclear war.”
  • The report will be submitted to the eighty-second session of the UN General Assembly, in 2027.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki Prefectures recommended eight experts (six from Hiroshima and two from Nagasaki) as panel candidates.
  • Although no experts were hired, we provided information about experts to NAC (New Agenda Coalition) member nations.

Republic of Kazakhstan

In July 2025, we paid a courtesy visit to Kazakhstan government officials to express our gratitude for their understanding of and support for HOPe’s efforts, and to request continued cooperation toward achieving our common goal of realizing a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons by 2045 at the latest.
