"Beyond Nuclear Deterrence" Post-event at the 63rd Pugwash Conference in Hiroshima
The international situation surrounding nuclear weapons is extremely grave, marked by threats backed by nuclear arsenals, rapid nuclear force expansion, and heightened tensions among nuclear-armed states. At this event, we will examine the inherent challenges of nuclear deterrence—the foundation of security relied upon by nuclear-armed states and their allies—including what might happen if nuclear deterrence fails. We will then explore, as concretely as possible, how a security system not relying on nuclear deterrence might be constructed.
We are honored to welcome two distinguished scientists who have long been active globally in the field of nuclear disarmament, including through the Pugwash Conferences. Together with all of you, we wish to explore these issues.
