Hiroshima Prefecture and HOPe supports United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Hiroshima Office activities and utilizes Hiroshima's global presence and expertise to contribute to peace int the international community through human resource development.
What is UNITAR?
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a dedicated training arm of the United Nations. Founded in 1963, UNITAR offers innovative learning solutions to individuals, organizations and institutions around the world to build capacities for a sustainable future.
In 2023, UNITAR trained over 540,000 learners around the world to support their actions for a better future. UNITAR has a global presence, with offices in Geneva, Hiroshima, New York and Bonn and networks around the world.
What is UNITAR Hiroshima Office?
Established in 2003 in the symbolic city of peace and reconstruction, the UNITAR Hiroshima Office offers training on themes such as nuclear disarmament, peacebuilding, and development to help realize a sustainable and prosperous world.
Together with our partners in Hiroshima, we offer leaders and individuals from around the globe the opportunity to learn about the consequences of the atomic bombing and the importance of fostering peace.

UNITAR Association, the National Committee for UNITAR in Japan
The UNITAR Association was founded in Hiroshima in 2019 as UNITAR’s official support organization in Japan.
As a national committee for UNITAR in Japan, the UNITAR Association supports the UNITAR Hiroshima Office on awareness-raising and outreach efforts.
Projects targeting Japanese Youth
UNITAR Hiroshima Office conducts training programmes and public events, especially for youth including high school students. Through UNITAR’s activities, young people who are interested in working towards peace and a sustainable society deepen their understanding of the SDGs and peace. They also have the opportunity to engage in discussions with high-ranking officials from the United Nations.
