Environment of Hiroshima
Hiroshima Prefecture is blessed with a beautiful and rich environment, beginning with our pride, the Seto Inland Sea, and the abundant green Chugoku mountain range.
In order to continue protecting this blessed and rich environment into the future, we aim to achieve a net zero carbon society with zero greenhouse emissions by 2050, by proactively centering carbon recycling-related technology and promoting the adoption of reusable energy. Furthermore, we aim to achieve zero new plastic waste outflow into the Seto Inland Sea by 2050, by popularizing the promotion of products made from alternative materials such as paper or reusable plastics, and plastic waste outflow preventative measures etc. Through these initiatives, in collaboration and cooperation with a variety of constituents, such as Hiroshima Prefecture’s citizens and business persons, we are working hard to comprehensively promote new environmental policies.

Action For ZERO
（GREEA SEA SETOUCHI HIROSHIMA・PLATFORM（GSHIP））
In Hiroshima Pref., aiming for zero new plastic waste into the Seto Inland Sea by 2050, we released the “2050 SHINING GREEN SEA SETOUCHI HIROSHIMA DECLARATION” and founded “GREEN SEA SETOUCHI HIROSHIMA・PLATFORM” (GSHIP), who consist of companies, municipalities, etc., in June 2021. We are currently reviewing and implementing initiatives.
At our booth, we will introduce advanced models builting with GSHIP members to address issues we work on, including plastic usage reduction and waste outflow prevention measures.
UMILE Program

The UMILE program was launched as part of Unilever’s commitment to strive for a waste-free world, reducing the amount of plastic, circulating resources, where sustainability is put into practice under the slogan of “eco friendly activities with a good deal!”.
We have named the approach of this regional resource loop “Unite for Smile. Umile Hiroshima” and have been collaborating with Hiroshima city, other companies participating in the GSHIP community. Through this act, not only have we been returning the value of empty plastic bottles as a ‘G7 Summit limited design UMILE cardcase’ but have also been able to expand the awareness of circulating resources.

Field Trial using Smart Waste Compactor

Plastic pollution in the ocean has become a global issue. To address this issue, KDDI Research, Inc., and FORCETEC, Inc. are jointly conducting a feasibility study for reducing ocean plastic pollution in Hiroshima and other cities. Since there are few waste bins in Japan, waste overflowing from waste bins and littered waste spill into the ocean.
Therefore, smart waste compactor called “SmaGO” has been installed in the cities to reduce the waste. In addition, we are developing efficient methods for reducing ocean plastic pollution by using data collected by SmaGO, and verifying them through simulations.

Bagasse mold tray + lid for Okonomiyaki
（Shingi Co., Ltd.）
We created “HiroMaru Bagasse”, a container made of bagasse (squeezed sugarcane residue), for take-out Okonomiyaki, a symbol of Hiroshima's food culture. By using containers made of environmentally friendly plant-derived materials instead of disposable plastic ones, we hope to help reduce marine debris. The container absorbs the water vapor from the hot Okonomiyaki and prevents water droplets from accumulating inside the container. This means that the Okonomiyaki you take home will be just like the one you eat at the restaurant.

Loop – A Global Platform for Reuse

Loop is a global reuse platform enabled by a multi-stakeholder coalition of manufacturers, retailers, and consumers that aims to Eliminate the Idea of Waste®. Loop partners with brands and retailers to shift from a disposable to durable supply chain which enables consumers to responsibly shop for a wide variety of commonly used products. Loop is available in France, Japan and the U.S.

Realization of horizontal recycling of beverage labels
（Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation）
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Fuji Seal,Inc. have developed a recyclable (label to label) shrink label that can be material recycled.
In order to promote horizontal recycling of beverage labels and bottles, this project conducted (1) verification of label sorting technology and (2) educational activities for consumers to promote the separation of PET bottles into bottles, labels, and caps, in collaboration with industry, academia, and the private sector.
We will continue to work together with all parties concerned to establish a scheme to realize high-quality resource recycling of plastics.

The Realization of a CUP TO CUP
（TOKAN KOGYO CO.,LTD）
This initiative is to recycle cups that had been disposed of as garbage after use through the CUP TO CUP mechanism. By encouraging consumers to participate in the action of using the Re-CUP WASHER to remove food residues from the inner surface of cups (behavior change), we aim to turn cups into "resources" and realize a zero waste society.
Re-CUP WASHER is the first step toward realizing a circular economy for cups made of paper, resin, aluminum, and other materials.

CERBLEN EC
（DAICEL CORPORATION）
DAICEL “CELBLEN EC” is Non-edible Biomass, Marine biodegradable and visible clear resin.
As a member of GSHIP, we plan to recycle amenities in hotels and cutleries in stadiums into pipes for oyster farming. As a first step, toothbrushes have been adopted at hotels in Hiroshima.
Through recycling CELBLEN EC, Daicel challenges to reduce marine plastics.
